How to Make Wax Candles: Your Step by Step Guide

How to Make Wax Candles: Your Step by Step Guide
Candles are a fantastic addition to any home. Whether they are used around a relaxing bubble bath or on a romantic table set for two, they will always add to the ambience. Learning how to make wax candles will help you to add your own special touch.

In order to learn how to make wax candles you can follow this step by step guide:

Choose your wax.
Before you can begin making your candles, you need to choose your desired wax of choice. Paraffin wax and bees wax are the two most popular. These can be bought in blocks.

Melt the wax.
You will need to melt the blocks of wax down. To do this, you will need to use a double boiler. You cannot put the wax on direct heat as it will catch alight. If you do not have a double boiler, all that you will need is a large pan filled halfway with water and a smaller pan to put the wax into before placing it into the boiling water. Cut the wax into smaller chunks before placing them into the small pan.

Check the heat.
Check the heat and do not leave the wax unattended when you are melting it. It is ideal to use a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. Depending on the type of wax that you buy will determine what temperature the wax should reach when being melted. Be sure to check this before starting the process.

Add scent.
If you so choose at this point in the process, you can add a scent to the wax. You can do this with essential oils. Just remember to read the instructions on the scent in order to ensure that you add the correct amount.

Pick a colour.
The majority of wax will be plain when you purchase it. You can add colour to it by using oil based dyes (food colouring does not work). Like the scent, the colour that you choose is up to you. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can make a tye-die candle.

Pick your mold.
Pick the shaped mold that you want to use to create your candle and add the wick. The wick needs to be placed in the middle of the mold and can be stuck down by using double sided adhesive. To keep the length of the wick away from the wax, tie it around a pen or pencil, or clip it to something while pouring in the wax.

Pour in the wax.
Once the mold is prepared, you can pour the wax in. Be careful when doing this as the wax will still be hot and could potentially burn you.

Allow to cool.
You should let the wax cool in the mold for about 24 hours.

Remove the candle from the mold and enjoy! Depending on the mold you choose to use, you may need to remove the candle from it. Snip the wick to the desired length and then sit back and enjoy your candle.
